Tyndale Choral Society - Summer Sing (2008)

For four Monday evenings from 28th July, John Hicks (Tyndale Bass) led the Summer Sing at St Martin’s Church North Nibley, with James Corbett as accompanist.
John chose pieces from the European Sacred Music book (ed. Rutter, OUP) to complement the Nigel Perrin workshop, due on 27th September.
The Summer Sing is always relaxed and ‘just for fun’, and all were welcome to join on any evening. Over the four weeks 32 different singers came, including 9 non-Tyndalers, and we had an average attendance of 24 which, miraculously, gave us a reasonably balanced choir. We tackled Monteverdi, Verdi, Faure, Mozart, Brueckner, Schubert and, in the second half of the last Sing, we attempted a performance of what we had learned.
Audrey Sewell provided refreshments (with home made biscuits, no less), and the Summer Sing raised £95 for St Martin’s. As the church costs £100 per day to run, we can at least say we managed to keep it funded for 24 hours (when Gift Aid is taken into account!).
Some rounded off each evening in a local hostelry where alcoholic beverages were available in exchange for legal tender.
Altogether, it was great fun; we learned some varied and beautiful music, made new friends, and kept a church standing for a day.
Well done, John!
